online introductory journal

I am hoping to be better equipped to teach about global climate change after this course. I am lucky that I teach an ecology class where I can cover environmental issues that I feel are important. Last year was my first opportunity to teach this class and to teach about global climate change (GCC). This year is only my third year teaching. I really hope to be better able to convey all of the background information that students need in order to understand GCC.
I hope that this class shows me some resources that I do not know about. I feel that the last and only time that I taught about GCC that the information was disjointed and did not flow together into a cohesive unit. I hope that I can use some of the material presented in this class as a source of information to present to my students and possible projects they can do. I also hope to make improvements on how I teach climate change so that the information all connects fluidly and hopefully students can see why GCC is important to them and the global community.
I feel that this class could have a huge impact on how I teach GCC because I am a newer teacher and have only taught about this topic once before. I am open to new ways to approach the subject and interesting ways for students to learn about it. I have a good background on GCC having taken a class on it in graduate school, but knowing and teaching are two different things. I feel that I could do a better job conveying information about GCC and getting the students more involved. I am interested in hearing about other teachers' experiences teaching this topic, and seeing if this class offers any information about projects students can do to really get involved with the topic of global climate change.

To Teach is to Learn

One thing that I have been thinking about lately is having my students become the teachers. I am a newer teacher and my lessons are always evolving so I have been thinking about trying something new. I was thinking that this spring I would have my high school students prepare lesson plans to teach to some middle school classes. I mean I really think that they would dig being the teachers and the younger kids look up to them more than us adults.
I was hoping to do this with topics on any environmental issue and have the students get out doors as much as possible. I look at some of the climate stuff for younger kids and I think that this format could work for GCC lessons too.
My students will learn because they have to teach someone else.

Climate Resources

I have on the side some resources I have used in class and out.

Real Climate.org
Great website for up to date information. A lot is over my head but it is interesting to see what is being talked about by experts and people who follow this topic closely

Little Ice Age: Big Chill
DVD
This documentary is great. It talks about the ocean conveyor belt and past climate fluctuations and the difference between then and now.

Windows to the Universe
We can't just talk all the time. Here are some activities to do with students. Most are pretty basic but they can be good introductions or modified for higher levels.
